A Legacy of Training and Tradition

Built to replace the original Kaiwo Maru, which trained merchant marine cadets for over half a century, the current vessel continues this important role today.

While its appearance reflects traditional tall ship design, it incorporates modern naval engineering for enhanced performance. In addition to cadets, civilian trainees also spend time aboard the ship to gain hands-on knowledge of life at sea and an appreciation for seamanship.

Opportunities to see a vessel of this scale and significance are rare. Its visit to Richmond offers a unique chance to connect with maritime history, culture and craftsmanship.
